A Biblioteca da Ajuda, uma das mais antigas Bibliotecas de Portugal, teve origem no século XV, como Biblioteca Real, e esteve instalada a partir do século XVI (?) no torreão poente do Paço da Ribeira. Foi substancialmente enriquecida por D. João V.
